Wayside Equipment

Components:
The wayside equipment essentially comprises infrared beacons for vehicle location, devices for traffic light pre-emption at junctions as well as other equipment at the stops.

Traffic light pre-emption:
Public transport is attractive to the user when the vehicles are fast and punctual and travel in quick succession within an optimized network. Comprehensive analyses of journey time have shown that especially in inner cities areas, i.e. when travelling on buses or trams, time spent waiting at lights often accounts for 30% and more of the total journey time.

This means that passengers on buses and trams spend one third of their journey waiting at red lights! Our solution for giving priority to buses and trams at the traffic signals, which is integrated into VICOS-LIO, significantly shortens journey times, making public transport much more attractive to the passengers.

The integrated radio pre-emption system, IFAS:
IFAS registers the vehicle with the corresponding junction controller, requests green as soon as the vehicle approaches the junction and deregisters the vehicle once it has passed through the junction. These measures significantly reduce journey times, schedules are adhered to and the transport authority saves money – optimized block building means that fewer vehicles are required.
